The life of a college student is a complicated one. It is one big rush of class, assignments, work, friends, family, and figuring out what we want to do with the rest of our lives. Between all of these thoughts and worries, we rarely have time think about reading a book. It is fairly low on our list of things to do, if it is even there at all. Joan’s issue of not having time is a solid and very relatable reason to not be able to read. It is almost a tragedy that we cannot lose ourselves in a story the way we should, but it is also inevitable. However, the culture of college students is not a typical one, but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't be taken into consideration.
The warm image of sitting on the end of a couch on a rainy day cozying up with a book is a visualization that almost anyone can relate to. What would happen if I replaced “cozying up with a book” with “cozying up with a Kindle”? Does it have the same effect? This was the point that Joan was trying to convey, and I thought it was very interesting. Though it pains me to admit, there are emotional books that I have read that made me cry while reading them. When the tears splash on the page they are physical representations of my connection with the characters in the story. If tears splashed onto my Kindle or tablet, I wouldn’t be reveling in the emotion the story evoked from me. I would be rushing around trying to find something to wipe my tears off of the screen with. Joan’s strong and compelling opinions made me reconsider and remember the magic and simplicity of reading from print books.
