Interview with Joan
Joan is also a freshman at Emory University, and she is an intended chemistry major at the college. Despite her science orient background, she is an avid reader. However, she admits that she has been slacking in her leisurely reading, which is completely understandable. I find that in college, certain priorities overshadow my passion to pick up and get lost in a book. Similar to myself, she regarded school and work as of the biggest obstacles obstructing her reading. As I reflect back on my project, I realize amusingly that I probably chose the worst interview subjects to investigate my topic: college students. I, myself, hardly have time to even remember there are books out there simply for me to enjoy. There is so much going on in a typical college student's mind that books are no longer a priority unless they are directly related a particular class class.
Joan, like Sam and Rick, preferred print books. While she understood and could relate to my reasons behind why an e-book is more economic and convenient, there were some nostalgic qualities of print books that just can’t be replaced. “You can’t cuddle with an e-book,” she claims while grinning. On a more practical side, there are also technical difficulties that a person may encounter with e-books that would never come up with physical books, such as compatibility or connectivity issues. I have experienced many times when the only thing stopping me from enjoying my favorite book is not being able to find the USB cord that connects my device to my laptop. Joan also brought up how her fear of spilling coffee on a print book wouldn't as big as if she were to spill coffee on an e-book. The fragility of e-book devices make her hesitant about using one. She would be willing to pay a bit more for a hard copy that she can hold in her hands and enjoy. There is simply a magic with print books that can't be replaced.
