Interview with Rick
Rick spun around in the chair in my room as I began to talk to him about books. He is currently a freshman at Emory University and a math major. He admitted that he is not much of a reader. I assumed this prior to talking to him, and my assumptions were accurate. This may not be the case for all math and science majors, but it is easy to believe this since their major does not require much literature reading. When I asked why, Rick claimed that he never had a passion for reading, and that he had a hard time finding books that kept his interest. Finding books to read was always a challenge, especially leisurely books. I always felt as though it would be a waste of my time to read a book that was not captivating to me, especially if I am reading at my own will.
I was also very interested to hear about Rick's opinion on print books versus e-books, since he is not an avid reader. I expected his opinion to be somewhat unbiased with a more practical approach to everything. Rick told me that he actually preferred physical books instead of e-books. Since he did not read for leisure, his opinions were based on his experiences with textbooks. He said that his eyes hurt after a while from staring at the screen for too long, which was not a great experience when he needed to do long-term studying. He would even go print everything out if necessary rather than read from his laptop screen. Studying can be a tedious process, and when I am reading off of a screen, it is harder to maneuver around if I am reading off of a laptop or computer. I also agree that it is harder to make side notes or keep track of where I left off in a particular reading.
